Workshops at The Drama-Play Connection

Our workshops give students an opportunity to learn new skills and enjoy a variety of activities.   Each workshop is led by an instructor with special knowledge or expertise of the subject matter. 

   
     
Introduction to Acting and Performance Skills for Adolescents    
 

This Workshop will focus on three phases of the acting process:  1: Preparation and Exercise geared to sharpen acting skills and increase creativity and spontaneity; 2: Character Development and Performance Selections; and 3: Performance preparation. 

A final performance will be either live or filmed, as determined by the students.

The Art of Mentalism    
  Mentalism is an art of supernatural mental abilities, such as telepathy. It is the most powerful type of magic. In this workshop, students will learn the fundamentals of mentalism, such as reading body language, understanding the "tells" by looking at the posture, gestures and other physical signals of another person. Students will also work on developing their character and routine as a mentalist, as well as learn many fun mental illusions.

The Art of Face Painting    
  Students of this course will learn everything from the tools (paints, brushes, etc.) face painters use to how the tools are utilize to create a wide variety of designs. Students start with the basics and complete the course with techniques used to paint any design desired. Also, the course teaches students who to use this valuable skill in the community and how to work with a variety of clients.  Specific topics include starting small talk, keeping a conversation going, working with a variety of different people.

Illusion 101    
 

Our Illusion 101 workshop teaches the basics of magical illusion and performance.  Students will learn many basic magic tricks, as well as some of the most commonly used techniques.  This workshop will provide students with some of the necessary props and tricks that will be learned.  Students will also learn how to engage with their audience.

Elements of Comedy    
 

This workshop is geared toward young actors who want to develop their individual repertoire of skills and who recognize that comedy is often seen as more difficult than dramatic acting. With a focus on different styles of comedy performance, students will learn and develop their comedic acting skills through progressive comedy techniques while working with a range of comedy scripts across various formats (comedy drama, satire, live theatre, filmed, etc.). Students will also learn how to analyze and break down scripts to find classic joke set-ups and identify the rhythm, timing and pace to maximize performance, as well as learn how to develop comedic characters. Finally, students will gain practical experience for auditions and production performance through the rehearsal and preparation of filmed scenes to study in a group format.

Culinary Arts    
 

Through hands-on learning, students learn basic cooking and baking techniques utilizing a wide variety of ingredients to prepare all many wonderful dishes and specialties. Additionally, students will learn to use sensory evaluations to understand herbs and their role in creating flavor profiles. Recipes will be analyzed and modified to create individualized masterpieces.

Clowning Around    
  The class focuses on the art of Clown in the context of Theater, Comedy, and Circus. Students learn the basics of clowning as well as performance skills and social clowning. Exercises in clowning, physical comedy, and improvisation are used to develop confidence and skills interacting with performance partners and audiences

The Art of Balloon Twisting and Design    
  Students have a blast learning how to turn a variety of balloons into almost anything imaginable! This course starts with the basics of twisting and the unique knots twisters use to manipulate the shape of a balloon. Students will learn basic designs as well as how to create their own and unique designs. This workshop also teaches students how to perform and interact with audiences of all ages while making balloon designs.
